Common use

Gleevec (imatinib) is prescribed for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with Philadelphia chromosome, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). It works as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, blocking the activity of abnormal proteins that drive cancer cell growth, thereby slowing or stopping tumor progression.

Dosage and direction

Gleevec is taken orally, usually once daily, with or without food. Swallow tablets whole with water. Dosage varies depending on the type of cancer, patient response, and other medications. Regular blood counts and liver function tests are required during treatment.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, heart problems, low blood counts, or a history of infections. Monitor for signs of swelling, unusual bleeding, or shortness of breath. Avoid pregnancy while taking Gleevec, as it can cause serious birth defects.

Contraindications

Do not use Gleevec if allergic to imatinib or any of its components. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless directed by a healthcare provider.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle cramps, and rash. Serious side effects may include liver toxicity, low blood counts, bleeding, heart problems, or severe allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if serious symptoms occur.

Drug interaction

Gleevec may interact with other cancer medications, certain antibiotics, antifungals, anticoagulants, and drugs affecting liver enzymes. Inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose.

Overdose

Overdose may cause severe nausea, vomiting, low blood counts, liver toxicity, or heart problems. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Gleevec at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep tablets in the original container and out of reach of children.
